pretty much all you have to do is get them on the same "workgroup" and then just share some files.

By default the workgroup names are different..for xp it is "mshome" and w98se it is "workgroup"....so I would change the W98se name to "mshome"...so just right click "network neighborhood"..click "properties"..then click the "identification" tab....and you'll see where it says "workgroup"..change that to "mshome"....

ok, it'll ask you about rebooting but say "no" for right now.

ok, now you have to enable "file and print sharing"...so while you already have that window still up there..instead of "identification" click on the "configuration" tab.....then click "file and print sharing".....check the box for "i want to give others access to my files.

Reboot.

File and printer sharing should already be enabled on the xp machine by default.

ok, now you just need to actually "share" some files or folders....and if you right click on a file or folder in w98se you will now see a new option there for "sharing"...click that and youll see your options for sharing...choose "shared as" and you can give it another name or usually you just keep the same name...then you choose the type of share...if its at home you usually go "full".

You'll probably have to reboot again there....then when it reboots you'll see a little "hand" under the icon..thats indicating that it's shared.

So go to the other machine and go to network neighborhood or "my network places" and browse for the "share".

Sometimes it takes up to 15 minutes for new stuff to show up so dont freak if it takes a few minutes at first.

You probably have to turn off XP firewall to get it to work.

oh, and if the name of the W98se comp has a space in it..take it out, lol.

If its, for instance "marks comp" make it "markscomp"..cuz XP wont like that space and it could give you weird behavior on sharing stuff. The name is changed back at the same place as the workgroup name was.

By the way, sharing between 2 comps is a cool way to do backups.

Win98 has the default workgroup name of "workgroup"..so it has to be changed to "MSHOME".

Here is a post from yesterday about the exact issues involved.

Mainly on WinXP sharing is enabled by default. On 98se it isnt so you have to enable it.
