Restore MP3 Codec

Apparently my windows mp3 codec is gone. I can't play any MP3 file, or about 80% of movies in windows medai player. With movies, it tries to download a codec and on about half of them brings up Frehuer (or something like that) mpeg-3 codec, and clcik yes to install it, but then it say it still can't play it, and even if I try to play the movie again, it asks if I want to download the codec again. The movie portion plays fine.

I have uninstalled WMP, and reinstalled it, but the problem persists.

You could try giving an mp3 codec a higher priorty in the audio codecs under dev manager.

Sounds like the perfect plan if I knew what Dev manager was.

If you mean device manager, that only lists devices installed of your computer. As far as I know, it doesn't list any codecs.

HAHAHA, I have installed RADIUM mp3 condec, the Nemo codec pack, the Kazaa Lite Codec pack, MWP codecs, and everything else I could possible image that had some form of mp3 codec in it.

Of course, I uninstalled each one of those as I relized they didn't fix the problem.

While cleaning out an old 10GB backup Hard drive, I found the LAME mp3 codec. LAME is a great encoding codec, but it's really hard to find a compiled source for it, since it's mostly used by Linix users.

Well, this was a compiles source (14K) I installed it (which took about 2 seconds) and now MP3's and movies play fine!! Good old LAME.

I'll have to put it on the Yahoo briefcase in case of future problems and to help others since finding that compiled source was so hard.

So its ok now?

Audio codecs are under sound and video devices in the device manager. I had a problem and game one a higher priority and seems ok now.
