Power Supply voltage levels - 14v???

Hi,

I've been having some problems with my machine lately - dead hard drive, random file corruption.... I recently installed and ran Winbond Hardware Doctor with my Abit AT7 and it observed a voltage of 13.99v on my 12v line. The bar only goes up to 14v in this software though - when I tried speedfan I saw a voltage of 15.50v I don't have my meter with me to measure it manually, but this seems really off. Could this damage my hardware? All the other levels are perfect. My ps is an enermax 431w fca.

Thanks,
Chris

I had 3 broken down hds with +12V wandering around 13V.
So, it could damage your hardware

try motherboard monitor . it is kinda a pain to set up but you can check it against what you are using now .
aida32 will do it also .

The max voltage either way on any rail should not exceed 10%.
In this case 12 volts should not exceed 13.2 v or drop below 10.8 v.

Omardeth, Maybe you could post up a link to the PS you recommend.

I got the Vantec ION 400watt constant load (500watt max load peak 12 seconds) for $60 at newegg. My 12v and 5v rails went high after I installed radeon 9800np. It killed my cheapo TTGI 400watter in 2 weeks flat. LOL. This one is purring along QUIETLY and not one V spike yet-I have a alarm and mon running all the time. It will flag it red and show the spike when happens. Asus probe. The 400 ION is good price. Has short circuit protection. Auto speed sensing fans thermal controled and manual override. Thermal protection-overload protection. Garunteed to never have catastrophic failures (burn wires-flame-EXPLODE). Cant say enuff good things about it since I got mine. Antec was my 1 choice but I went Vatnec cause of more features at lower price. That and not one bad review I could find on it! Check'em out-newegg still had them last I checked. The Vantec Stealth is there top end ones-ION is budget. Only diff is Stealth has bigger HS so fan is so quiet you can barely hear it. Heck the ion is uber quiet even.

It's even tighter than that. The latest ATX spec allows for only a 5% tolerance on the positive voltages.

From link....

"Pros:

• Dual fans
• Fits both P4 & Athlon mainboards
• Decent amount of connectors

Cons:

• Poor packaging
• A little pricey for a “budget” PS"

"• Supports Pentium4 and AMD Athlon mainboards
• Protection circuits for inrush current, over current, and over temperature
• Meets ATX ver 2.03 and ATX 12V ver 1.1 specs
• Dual fans for better cooling"

Duel fans is standard today-not really a feature. For less $ the vantec offers short circuit and catastrophic failure protection. And its not a budget unit either. Dunno. Seems-generic'ish. Id go antec or vantec or similar well known brand. TTGI wasnt rated bad either-but it didnt stop mine from blowing and it was 420watts. Watts arent = amungst all PSU's. Also note since a max load isnt listed (less I missed it) it means 500watts for 12 sec or less-400watt constant. Gotta watch that. That is what Tom's H was going off about. So the Vantec Ion 400watt constant (500watt max) at same power rating is $60 and with more features plus long standing brand name so the warrenty will be good.. Choices choices-eh?...hehe. Omardeth-I'm not trying to step on yer toes-please dont take it that way.

no offence taken . so take none on my commements since you named me and i didn't even post the link hahaha

the vantec power supply is nice don't get me wrong . but it is 60$ or more . the one that was posted ( thanks JP ) is 22$ or 1/3 the price . not really comparing apple with apples are we .
vantec is not a "long standing company " i don't even think they make the power supply just put there name on it . They started out making fan's . As far as the warranty i have no idea how good it is . not saying vantec isn't a good company . i think they are good , i have never had a problem with anything i have gotten with the vantec name on it . matter of fact i luv the vantec aeroflow hsf .
brand name is a do or die way to live . when you buy brand names you pay for the name .

look at it thisway . what would you buy a nec flat panel or a hyundai flat panel monitor ?

most people would say " no question there , i would get the nec " for the reasoning that you have stated . the brand name . but did you know that hyundai make the flat panel for BOTH the monitors ? yet the nec cost 20% more ? i wonder why is that ?

the achieve power supply ( thanks again JP for posting ) REPLACED a Antec tru550 in my system .. yes i said REPLACED . thats how i found out about them . i needed a cheap ps to use while i RMA'd the antec .. well when the antec came back i never put it back in ...

your comments are correct that you have to make sure you get a good power supply . i won't knock ya for that . but without ever seeing or useing the achieve power supply i think you are wrong to knock it .
