Kids wifi card prob's

hello all, my step-dad has a compaq 1700t laptop and he had win ME on it. he decided to upgrade to win2k because his digital camcorder didn't work on it. so all of the periphrials that he had installed before, he didn't take them off when he did an upgrade so when the upgrade was done, the wifi card didn't work. i uninstalled it and that was ok so i went to install it again and it said "network device not ready". that happens when i try to run the setup .exe file. so i decided that we probably have to uninstall the wifi router. i went to do that and it said that some of the files are missing? i don't understand why i can't uninstall the wifi router. right now he has win2k and it's a linksys wifi card and router 54g. nice card and router so it's a pain that it doesn't work. he can get on the internet with a conventional rj-45 cord but he (rightley so)wants the wifi card to work. also, when it did work under win ME, he said that the signal strength wasn't that strong, is there anyway of making it stronger without buying a signal booster?

thanx in advance,
<shad>

Look on the Linksys website for new drivers for Win2K. Also, the OS shouldn't increase or decrease the signal strength. Your signal strength is just a function of distance from the router, obstructions between card and router (re: walls), and the power of the transceivers in router and wifi card. WinME to Win2K shouldn't change the strength of the signal at all. A new driver, however, MAY be able to strengthen your signal. Maybe.
