.ts codec help..........

OK, I've googled this 'til the cows come home & I don't know that I've ever seen a more "elusive" topic for something that is probably as common as .pdf files these days!!

Many of the video files on the popular P2P servers these days are (or appear to be) .ts files. Even if they have a ".avi" or ".wmv" extension in the title, they can still turn out to be ".ts" if you look at their properties. In my case, I'm using Kazaalite and have recently d/l'd their most comprehensive codec pack & I still get nothing on the video. Any ideas?? Any best place for codecs?? TIA!!

Actually, I stand slightly corrected for the moment. I'm noticing that if I preview using K's "Avi-preview" video comes up but not audio. I don't know if audio would/will come up as a latter part of the d/l or if the audio stream should be there. This software shows the file as "mp43". I know this is just another version of compression, but I'm not familiar with it either.

Perhaps one day in a galaxy far, far away formats will be universally recognized, used and compatible?? LOL......yeah right!

ts means telesync, and it's not a fileformat.

Well, that was about 50% informative and 50% not!

Whatever the case, both the video & audio streams are working now so I don't know what the deal was but oh well!

Anybody know of a good site for a general codec pack??

There's a video file that plays on my old Windows Media player (version 8 on Windows ME) but won't play on my new one (version 9 on Windows XP). <<<Just lovin' XP more & more every day>>>

Anyway, when I open the file, WMP says it's looking to download the codec but then says that "codec download error" occured. If I utilize WMP update, it says it's the most recent sooooo....I dunno. I don't have Quicktime player on this new one yet.....but I really don't like having a half-dozen players just to view friggin' files. Any thoughts/suggestions???

Are you seriously asking that question?

The ability to play different video files is not a concern of microsoft, nor is it a concern of the player (unless playing with a player that has internal codecs, like vlc).

You should get 'gspot' to identify codec used to compress the file, usually ffdshow will decompress any video stream. I would suggest against codec packs.

Windows site does not have codecs for others than its own products. Eg. wmv and wma. wmp6.4 with ffdshow and ac3 filter will decode almost any stream.

muno's right. Use gspot. It's probably an svcd compliant mpeg if it's a telesync.

Well done guys!

I very much like the idea of an "identifier" and/or a program that'll identify/play any vid file.

Video will certainly be the death of all of us............

Without video, we could probably all still get by with 1.44 floppies!! LOL!! Thus, the reason we need things like USB 2.0, Firewire, Terabytes of storage space, $500 video cards and 16ms refresh rates on our LCD's!! har har har!!!!!!!!!!

Thanks again, guys......excellent answers!!
