Kids pc w/epox mobo freezes

Hi everyone,

I have an Athlon 1800+ ,512Mb Apacer DDR333 on a epox8k3a mobo, running win98. Once a month I need to disconnect the power cable of the pc in order to shut down, and often I need to
hold down the power button for several secs to shut down because in those case my desktop freezed, often during internet connections. Can anybody help me, do you need more details about my config ? Is this a hard/soft ware problem?

Thanks for urgent help cause I can't find out what really is going on.

Ltrz

Sounds like a driver problem. If you run in Safe Mode do you ever have this problem? Try setting your video driver to PCI adapter and see it that prevents the problem. Is so you have a bad driver install. Also, be sure DX is up-to-date. If it's not a driver problem then it may be heat related. Monitor your system temps closely.

Temps have been monitered and were OK. Never tried safe mode tough. If it's ok under Safe mode, what is the prob? What you mean by setting video driver to PCI adapter, in BIOS settings ???
Is DX related to internet progs??

Thx

Most of what I've mentioned including DX/drivers are video related. Bad video drivers are a leading cause of the type of problems you are experiencing. Network cards are another one. Boot to Safe Mode and change your display driver to the generic low res PCI VGA adapter. If you've kept up with Windows Updates then you maore than likely have the latest DX drivers. But that alone doesn't guarantee that they are properly installed. BTW, if your problem doesn't reocure while in Safe Mode then you know it's a driver problem

The problem is that it doesn't occur on a regular basis. Once rebooted, I don't have any probs for a certain time, then it
reoccurs after a while. I will look already for the latest drivers
and i'll come back if necessary. Thanks a lot

Bye
