Switching to Linux?
I just realized that I really dont play games anymore. The only real reason that I am still using XP was that I was playing games. So I have decided to install linux on my box and see what happens. What kerneral should I use? I was thinking Drake 9.2. I use my computer for mainly downloading(edonkey2000) chatting and watching video(stargate). The other things I use it for is photo editing and video editing. I would like to set up a web server . I am I going to have driver problems when I switch? Peer to peer what is a good linux one? What are some of the basic programs that everyoen need for linux and where is a good scource for them. What else should I do or know?

You might want to setup a dual boot system and get used to Linux for a while before attempting to jump right in and switch. Most of what I see you doing is quite easily done in Linux, but you wou would have to get used to doing many things differently. There is the question of hardware support -will all the hardware you currently have be supported in Linux? Also there is the question of your current software investments -I don't think that any Windows OS comes with free built in video editing software, so you might already have a hefty investment of time and money in Windows programs -you may not want to just kick them to the curb. You may find that video editing is still a daunting task in Linux, as with DVD authoring. There are some great programs available for Linux, but I recommend you take it a little step at a time.
Drake 9.2 is okay, but I don't think you will find a more user friendly distro than SuSE 9 Professional and some vid editing software is actually included.

For DVD playback you will want to use mplayer or xine, but you will have to download the latest versions, windows codecs, and libdvdcss separately from the Linux distribution because DVD decryption is still of questionable legality with Linux. Though I prefer SuSE, I have found this easiest to setup the first time using Mandrake.
BTW - I'm a Stargate junkie too

Mandrake will do you well. If you feel you want to jump right in, then GOOD FOR YOU! its the best way to learn. That said, I would have to recommend a dual-boot system first, as not everyone gets their bearings straight away. But for the purposes you describe, I don't see you having a problem. Mandrake even has the option of task-based menus so you don't even need to know the names of the programs you use, just what you want to do.
So; grab the ISOs, install, and rock on!

I agree with nukes and CMonster. Download Mandrake and dual boot for a little while. SuSE is nice but you can't download the ISOs. You must purchase it or do a FTP install which can be tricky if you are just starting out.
I've used Mandrake 9.2 and SuSE 9.0 recently and like both. I'm presently running SuSE.

CD 3 is mostly development stuff. When I installed Mandrake 9.2 I had to insert CD 3 and it only took a file or two off of it. You could probably get by without it for now. I don't think you'll miss anything.
You might miss a application that you'll never use. |
