Outdoors My lg cd drive is messed up

I put together a new system a couple months ago, and im having some real problems with my cd drive. Its a basic lg 52x (reader only, i didnt have alot of extra cash) and i hate it. Every time i try to install multi-disc software which requires you to switch cds in the setup, ill install a disc or two, but usually when i try to install the last disc, ill pop it in and hit ok, and nothing happens. It seems as if theres no disc in the drive. If only. The problem is that if i open up My Computer or Device Manager there is no device there! Its as if it never existed! Ive tryed looking through everything about the cd drive before and after it disappears, nothing, ive tryed unplugging the IDE and putting it back in, nothing, ive switched IDE cables, nothing, the only thing that works is a reboot, forcing me to start the installation again, only to have the problem happen again when i get to the last disc!!! My system is an AMD Athlon 2500, asus a7n8x-x mobo, 512 ram, WD 80 hd 8meg buffer, and i run windows xp pro. Any ideas whats wrong? any help would be appreciated.

By any chance have you run some linux on that comp or with that cd drive? Some version of linux is known to trash those lg drives I think.
