Mini ITX Discussion

Anyone out there have a Mini ITX system. These little rigs look sweet; a modder's dream.

A modders, but not a performers. I've never made a secret of the fact that I don't think much of mini-ITX beyond a toy--what's the point of modding a computer if you can't USE it?

Now I am exaggerating a bit there--certainly there's lots of basic tasks a C3 can do--but just remember that buying a C3-based mini-ITX is a guarantee that you'll never game on it--and even future multimedia work could be compromised due to the unchangeable fact that the FPU on that chip is so lousy.

Now there are supposed to be P4-based mini-ITX systems shipping or about to ship--those are a different story adn, I think, look much more interesting.

You've said that before. Any linkage to back it up?
Mini-ITX was meant to be small, cheap, quiet and cool. a P4 one would be none of those. I don't think Via is going to do something like this, but I would be very happy to see it. Please share this info with us.

Ok, here's what I found.

http://www.ivc.com.au/frames/product...php?prodid=571

That claims to be a mini-ITX--looks more like a Shuttle-type box to me, but its possible that the scale is simply off--there's no real way to compare.

http://www.sfftech.com/showdocs.cfm?aid=453&pid=1644

That's an article discussing Insight Solution's P4 mini-ITX...

http://www.casetronic.com/Product/Ba...4/cube-P4.html

Here's another claiming to be mini-ITX--I'm not entirely sure if the form factor is though. Its a bit confusing without cases set next to each other.

Anyone who thinks a P4 isn't cheap, quiet, and cool has never used a 2 GHz Celly. Whisper-quiet, very cool, and available for around $50. And it'll destroy the EPIA in terms of performance.

also check out mini-itx.com
I've posted several times about mini's...I have one and I'm typing on it now!
no games, no UD, no high-cpu stuff, but I do use it for mp3's, the S-video comes in handy for on-the-road usage...and I love its tiny size! my whole puter can fit in a napsack!
it's really quiet too.
I have the C3 800mhz Epia-V, which I paid $89 for, on eBay.
it uses sd-ram, up to 1gb...I have 512mb
it has tv-out, rca-out, onboard LAN, 2x usb, vga, printer, parallel, and the rca-out can be configured as well. three audio jacks- line in, line out, mic.
I have a 150w psu, and a disk burner. three 40mm "case" fans. it's quiet as h3ll!

mini-itx is good to experiment with...also powerful with linux!
~Branson
above all, just have fun with it!

If you want a feature packed mini that can still proform go with the DiGiMatrix from asus.
http://usa.asus.com/products/desktop...x/overview.htm

proportable is going to have them in stock soon...
http://proportable.g2.cc/
they told me they'd sell for about $500 w/o hd, cpu, and ram

lol. Thats a bit pricy. I'm just after one for a mod I have in mind, but with the current state of the FPU I'm not going to get one. Maybe a couple more revisions of the chip will yield good results.

Interesting links, thanks.

Basically I see two possible uses for a MiniITX system.

1) The Pentium 4 version above, which would be killer for a LAN party. Yes, I love the concept of such a portable machine.

2) The VIA version, which would make a great little MP3 jukebox or (as was pointed out) a great little Linux machine.

I just want to try one. They seem neat
