Comcast, servers, and you

My freind recently got Comcast cable, but like everyone else he can't even make a Warcraft III server on it, let alone a web server. Is their a way to bypass their restrictions in order to host a website on one of their comps? Yes, I know that Comcast gives you free webspace, but they don't offer the kind of control these guys want.

How are they restricting it? Simply telling you not to do it? or blocking ports? or what? If they are just looking for unusual port usage trying using a different port for the web site... set up apache to take connections on port 139 or something and then use a custom DNS forwarding to your IP and specific port. In the long run though they will probably notice if you get any trafic and yell at you. If you arnt in a contract and they are in your area try Sprint Fast Access DSL. Thats what I use and they dont care about game servers or anything.

Well I don't actually know how they do it, but making a server on Comcast residential is something that's not going to happen unless we bypass it in some way.

So you HAVE tried and it wont allow you to do it? Most companies just say dont do it and then they notice lots of connections and shut you down and yell at you... So you all have tried it... if so... what exactly did you try?

Don't tell anyone but I've hosted a web server on a Comcast connection. My friend also used to run a bf1942 server sometimes. They don't block you but it is against the TOS.

yeah... My guess is if you make it private you wont get a whole lot of traffic and you will be ok... its when you start burning your upload and stuff that they will take notice.

Hmm... well, I'll have to try some more methods I have in my book, maybe they have a different setup or something.
