Kids setting up a network

I recently purchased verizon dsl and am working to network three computers in my house. I have wired the rooms and such with cat 5e and installed network cards in all the computers. Two of which are running 98 and one running xp professional. I have not received my modem from verizon yet. I am wondering if someone could please give me some directions on how to connect and setup the Linksys router and modem that are given by verizon. I am also not sure which order everything needs to be done to have my network running smoothly and successfully.

Thanks!

In the router setup, you'll have to select the connection type that Verizon uses (pppoe, dhcp, etc) Then you'll have to put in your account information (username, password) to allow the router to connect to your Verizon account. From there the Linksys router will act as a gateway for all the computers on your LAN. That's the easiest way to go about it. I'm pretty sure the Linksys manual directs you to setup your network in a similar fashion.

Havent used Verizon, but Well its easy dont worry....

- Hook up the computers to the router...
- Hook up the modem to the router in "WAN/Internet" port.
- Turn on the modem, wait a minute or two.
- Turn on the Router.

Test if you have internet connection, fire up your browser, if you dont have internet access, point to http://192.168.1.1 (this is the default for linksys).

And add the information on SETUP tab, your username and password.

If you have any questions post back....

so once I get my modem all I have to do is connect it to the router turn on the modem, then the router and finally the PC's? I dont have to install any software or anything that comes from verizon?

Is there anything special that I need to do to share printers and files from a XP machine to a 98 machine?

So long as Verizon uses an authentication protocol supported by your router you have nothing to worry about and no additional software to install.

After you get all three to connect to the internet, you then have to enable file and printer sharing on each machine, and Share at least one folder on each comp for them to be "seen" when you view network connections.

All comps must have the same workgroup name, and don't use "MS HOME" or "workgroup". Select a unique name, something that doesn't become an easy target for hackers.

I was working on just setting up file and print sharing. However I am getting an error on the 98 machine. It is saying that it is unable to connect to the network. any ideas?
