Screen dying?
Please say No..!
Basically I have a CTX 17" VL700 monitor (bought it in 98). Last few days now it's been acting funny if turned on after a long time of being turned off. Winderz has always frozen if I have power management turned on so I always turn the monitor off manually when I'm gone for a long periods of time. Yesterday it also did that after being manually turned off/on in linux. Today it did the weirdness after being turned on in the morning. When turned on after a long time it shows the screen off center, the screen is always moved about 1-2 cm to the right. I haven't moved anything as far as the computer setup. The speakers are by the monitor like they've always been. So is it time to get a new monitor? (Please say no cause I've got no money)

Wish I could say "no" conclusively, but I'm not a TV (or monitor) repairman. I don't know off-hand what the root of the problem is, but you might try setting a screensaver to keep the monitor active when not in use and see if windows comes back up normally after running the SS for a while....

You didn't happen to change the screen resolution or refresh rate, did you LAF, cause that change can where the image is located on your monitor.
My computer does that all the time if I manipulate the settings in the control panel.

The main things you will notice when a monitor (or TV starts to go) is a dead black screen, or..a diagonal line high left to lower right..or, a solid white line across the middle of the screen left to right..and finally, foldover...this is where the top of the image is kinda folded over on itself..hard to miss. I have also seen foldover on the sides, but this is very rare. You may try a different video card, or uninstall the one you have now, and reinstall the drivers. Do you have the proper .INF file for that monitor?..what is the frequency you are runnng it at?

yeah, Iam 100% sure now that it is not the vid card doing it. It's the monitor....damn I also noticed that after about 30 seconds the screen gets back to normal

Hang in there. Might last for years yet. Settings might be drifting untill warmed up. I have old monitors run for years. Keep turning it off when not in use and may work forever Good luck, after all, you are gonna use it till it dies, right?

yeah...no money for a new one...it's that 17" that needs time to warm up, or an old 12" that never fully gets warmed up....
