The winds of change...

Not sure how many people pay attention to what comes out of the labs of our top research institutes here in the us but there are a singificant number of improvements in the pipeline, perhaps not visible for another 5 years but they are being developed..
Mram was invented recently and if used like a solid state hard drive would bring load times down to pico seconds when the ram and the storage are approximately the same, ram is fast enough that a boost like this will kill all hard drives when it hits the market as a storage device, probably be expensive like the ram based drives we have now but after abou a 5 year introductory period prices will drop.
I have to admit its taken solid state storage about 15 years or more to get down to the several thousand range for 20 gigs, but hey its cool stuff.
New methods of fabrication for memory and such are being made, the latest is occuring at an atomic level, in the end that will drive down production costs due to less silicon needed and lower voltages used...
But anyways im digressing...
IBM has divested itself of its storage manfucturing facilities and it formed a new company.
Im all for SATA coming in 74 gig sizes, I intend to design new systems with the 36 gig and 74 gig HD's as a standard feature.. If you're really tight fisted im sure you'd like to know that there are raptor drives with 5 year warranties being sold for 99 dollars or so in the 36 gig capacity.
