DMA and system resources
I recently enabled DMA for my hard drives, and now my system resouces get really low with the same amount of running apps, as before.
I know DMA takes some load off of the CPU, but why would my system resources drop to 18% with two instances of i.e. , music match juke box, IrfanView, MBM, zonealarm, nortonAV
it used to be in the 50% range with the same apps running
AMD 1800+
512 DDR pc2100 ( 2x256 )
WD 40gig 7200rpm 2mB cache ata 100 master
Maxtor 80gig 7200rpm 8mb cache ata 133 slave
Geforce2 64Mb mx/mx 400 agp
sb live 5.1
DVD-rom
CD-burner
linksys 10/100 nic
K7S5A v1.0

The issues aren't at all connected. Check for viruses and spyware.

I reran spybot, ad-aware, and norton, all is well
still it seems like more system resources are being used
2 instances of I.E.6 musicmatch jukebox, MBM, zonealarm, nortonAV, resouces say 38% free

I think that second link is more or less talking about IRQ's etc...they (along with I/O addresses) are sometimes referred to as "resources" but not in the same sense as the rest of this thread talks about.
The main practical thing is just to have the least amount of stuff starting up when the comp starts...if you have weatherbug, 3 chat programs, norton, 7 reminders, gator, etc etc..youre gonna be low onresources, lol.

thanx everyone!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!1
I did some checking myself too, maybe musicmatch is just a resource hog
the only things starting are, zonealarm, norton, shpc (something to do with my printer, tweakui ( if I turn this off will my settings reverse?)
I have very little going on, resources are at 83% after reboot, they don't drop a lot until I start up musicmatch, must be it
I ripped a DVD while surfing and stayed at 69% ( one instance of IE.6
it must be the music
