Dual boot XP/98

I'm trying to dual boot XP/98. The problem is that I have XP installed first, and now am trying to install 98. I set up a new partition for 98 and try to install onto it, but the thing gives some incompatibility issue.
Anyone know how I can fix this prob? Becoming a pain in the (_|_).

Maybe some compatibility problems thru XP??

I'm running XPPro on my master drive at the moment, but still have a spare HDD with 98SE installed on it, cos my old scanner drivers are not XP compatible.

I know youre supposed to install w98 first. Cuz if you do w98 second it will overwrite some xp stuff.

Is xp still booting?

I think you have to ghost the xp to a spare drive and then wipe the drive and start with 98 first....using only part of the hard drive for 98 leaving room for xp. Then again, not sure if ghosting would work in that case...cuz you need to INSTALL xp for it to set up the dual boot stuff.

The standard method is to install Windows 98 first. Then XP.

But if you have a second hard drive, it won't be that hard. Just unhook the XP hard drive and put in the second hard drive. Install W98 to the second hard drive.

You can put the W98 as secondary CS on the same cable as the XP. Use a Hot Swap tray for the XP (main drive). When you want to boot to W98, just pull the XP drive out. The computer will boot the first hard drive it finds.

I believe the problem is because of the NTFS file system in XP vs. 98's Fat32 file system. I also think that XP runs the boot sector differently than 98 and I'm assuming that Microsoft doesn't worry about people "looking back" at an old OS, so they don't include support to install it after you've installed the newest OS they carry.

You are either going to have to have another physical hdd to boot from, or you'll have to start over by making 2 partitions on the HDD you've got and install 98 first, then XP.

If your XP install is NTFS, then you're done.

If it's FAT32, then you can install it, but you'll have to do it from DOS, by booting w/ a floppy or the 98 CD. It will overwrite the MBR, but you can just use the XP install CD afterwards and use the 'Recovery Console' to fix it.

EDIT - I just luv this 'caching'. RedFury's post wasn't showing up.

Doh! Guess I'm SOL. -_-
I dont have a 2nd hdd, and no cross over cable to link this hdd to the laptop. O well...

John, the compatibility thing doesn't work. It's Jane's ATF Gold. I found out that they released a 98 patch for the game, so I'm trying to get the game on 98. But turns out I can't even install 98. O well, no biggie. Thx for the help guys.
