2 Comps Networked - Speed
I just recently networked my two computers. The thing is, the old crappy comp's connection is better than my new computer. Before i got the new comp the old comp ran the same speed the new comp does now, but since i networked the two, the old comp's speed got better for some reason. The New comp is closer to the router, has a shorter cable, has a better ethernet/network card and has 2.8 ghz compared to 900 mhz. does anyone know why the old one is faster? I noticed this while playing a game which indicates your "ping". ping for new comp is 100 and old is 60. i tried switching the cables, i tried different slots in the router. tried letting nothing run on my new comp, still no difference. what is the cause of this? also to mention there has been no speed loss even tho the 2 comps download at the same time and are on the same game server

60 and 100..thats not really a massive speed difference is it?

?? uhh, dont know the answer??? lol. if you are talking about the difference between 60ping and 100 ping I am just wondering outloud if that is considered a big difference?? I can see 500milliseconds being a difference..but 40 millis??
You are right, I dont know how to account for 40 milliseconds, lol.
Have you tried it several times and it is the same ping each time?? Uhh, has this made a noticeable difference in any game or anything or just the ping??

"better ethernet/network card "
how do you know which is better? Such a small difference in pings could just be one card a lil faster than the other. Is one onboard and one pci? Anyway to try another nic and see if it makes a difference?

Yeah, I think JP knows about ping. I think you misunderstood his post. He was just wondering if this is something worth worrying about considering how trivial 40ms is for ping.
I can understand wanting to know why one computer is connected faster than the other though too...
Might be a few different factors combined, not just related to cables.
One thing to note that I've observed... 2.8ghz isn't necessarily better than 900mhz. As far as phones are concerned, I've had more problems with the more "powerful" phone than the old one, not to mention battery life on the new one is shorter. Leave that one off the hook for 2 hours and it'll start beeping at you for a low battery. The 900mhz phone can stay off for a day without problems.
I'd say the older computer is negotiating protocols, etc with less interference because it can't pick up weak signals like the 2.8ghz can. Seriously think about it. If you increase a cars ability to receive radio signals, you end up getting other weaker stations weakly coming through on the more powerful, closer radio stations. I'm thinking there is a corrolation between signal strength and picking up random data that has to be filtered out.
A direction signal is cleaner than an omnidirectional signal.

Hey Red, congrats on 1000, lol. (a little premature, but the night is young!)

If that's true, i will gladly trade you a 900mhz duron for a p4 2.8ghz....

I don't know what JP plays, but 40 ping can make a big difference. 100 ping is already too much lag for what I play. And 140 would really suck. But 60 is even better.
Depends what kind of a game u play. What games does JP play?
