Which version of Linux?

Hey I am going to get Linux. I would be a noob with Linux and i was wondering if it matters which version I get. There is a lot of versions so I don't know which one to download. I went to Linux.com and it said it was ok to distribute it so I hope I'm not doing anything illegal . I was going to download redhat linux. Is that an ok version?? Go to linuxiso.org and tell me which one to dl plz. TY

try Knoppix. I'm using it right now at my school's library. all you do is burn the .iso image to a cd, pop it into any pc, reboot, and WHAM you're in Knoppix. it runs entirely from the CD-ROM drive (and the sys memory, so the more the better) and there's no real way to mess up your current configuration.
if you think you messed something up, take out the cd, reboot, and you're back into your normal system. and yes, you can save config changes, files created onto fdd or onto the hd...see the help pages.
Knoppix is the website I believe. there is current dispute over "trade secrets" overseas, so on the official website , it may not be possible to dl it, but you may find it on mirrors worldwide.

oh, be sure you download the version dated latest (i'm using version 9-22-03EN, for the English version)

*edit: You'll want to click on "Get Knoppix" which is a tab on the top of the page. Have fun!

It's like asking "which flavour of ice-cream ?"

Everyone has their favourite. Do a bit of research.... There are hundreds of threads in hundreds of forums asking the same thing.

Research what brand of Ice-cream is the best? No, I think not. At least personally, I feel the only way to find a distro you like is to try a few flavors. Start out with Chocholate (Mandrake) or Vanilla (SuSE), which most people like. Then branch out to the more exotic tastes, like Cookie Dough (Gentoo), Mint Chocolate Chip (Slackware), or Rocky Road (Debian).

LOL love those comparisons their, RedWolf!

Give Mandrake a shot, it's easy (for the most part) and has a bunch of features. Highly recommended, and others can back me up on this too.

I'm using Mandrake 9.2/Win2k on a dual-boot and Knoppix for homework in the library.
I started with Red Hat 8.0, but you'll find now that Red Hat is moving towards the corporate environment and will not support your software with updates from the Red Hat Network (RHN) which users previously enjoyed.
I prefer a distro with a clean, fresh GUI, and one that doesn't hog my sys resources. Fortunately, GNU/Linux is famous for this. Try them all...they're free, or cost very little if you don't have the bandwidth.

I'm a n00b too! but if you keep trying, and FIND A GURU, you'll have fun learning it!
