Systems Slow cableconnection

Hi ppl! I´d need some help here....

Sys specs: Win XP professional
Asus P4B motherboard
P4 2.0 Ghz
768 MB ram
**D-link 530 TX ethernet adapter

I´ve got a cable connection that normally lets me DL/UL
at betweeen 70-120 Kb/s in different fileshare communities.

For the last 10-14 days it´s never gone past 10 K/S, and normally it stays at 5.

When downloading from internet sites, the DL starts high, depending on site as high as 120 k/s, but immediately drops down to the speeds mentioned above.

If more than one person downloads from me, or if I download from more than one person, it normally drops to 0.5 on both of them immediately.

I´ve tryed checking for spyware, viruses etc, tryed to reinstall Win
and simply left the computer off for a while, in case it could be my ISP that locked my speed. (when DL past 4GB/week, they lock me to a max of 32K/s but this is most probably not that, due to the greater cutback in speed and the time it´s lasted.

Is it my ISP that doesn´t want me to download from fileshare communities or is my ethernet adapter defective, or what?

I think the loss of connections speed might have be related to me running the spyware program Adaware.. that´s the only unusual thing I can think of that I did when this problem first occured.

Any ideas on how to check this problem further, or if you know what the problem is.... I´d appreciate it.

Those speeds sound pretty bad all right.

But diagnose BEFORE you try to fix the problem!!!!!!!!!!

Go to the DSLReports Tweak Forum for some ideas on how to improve things. You'll need to download and run a little tool called Dr. TCP to optimize your settings. Then you can use the Tweak Test to see where you might be having problems.

Post back with results.

Read my posts in this thread:
http://www.techimo.com/forum/showthr...ighlight=drtcp

They reference what osprey is referring to...you can optimize your bandwidth using that DrTCP program.

The reason that you download speeds are very high as soon as you click "save", but slow down soon after is that your computer is already beginning to download the file in temp storage BEFORE you click "save"...so when you do, it's all rushes in at once to catch up to how far the file has actually been downloaded to your temp space. Once it catches up, it resumes normal d/l speeds.

What is your download/upload bandwidth capped at?

BTW, Welcome to TechIMO!!!

Yeah, it's Steve(MVP)McNair. I'm a huge Titan fan all the way back to the oilers and Earl Campbell.
