Need Help. Win 2k Pro crashing
My Daughter has brought her computer home from Maryland, a old K63+450 running on a via mobo with vodoo video. It had other hardware on it that I have disconnected. It's been on internet (broadband) without and spybot or adaware programs being run. There is a bunch of call home software on it. The prob is this wverytime I try to run Spbot win2k bluescreens and reboots. Is the a virus or something causing this

Yes, thnaks. I put the spybotremover on 1.2. I am going to use 1 of the older spybot programs and see what happens. My granddaughter has been the one using this and she dont care about the popups and ad's. She will find (if I can make it stable) that going from broadband to 56k modem will not allow her to surff the net as quickly as she has in the past.

Win2K could get unstable on some of the older VIA chipset boards. I had a FIC VIA 503+ for a long time, and I had to install the VIA 4in1 patches..but they also caused problems. Finding and using the correct older VIA patch is difficult..even tho VIA & FIC both say use the most current driver...`tain't so I'm afraid..not for my old board anyways.
In your case, the video and/or sound drivers may also play a part in the blue screens...and if you can do the necessary in safe mode, it may help.
When she gets into 56K technology..she will cry herself to sleep for a month, LOL
If you will not get broadband to soothe her pains a bit, I suggest you get some well prepared reasons as to why not..because I think I can assure you that she will employ every trick a daughter can, to force you to get it...even satellite, if you live in the boonies, LOL..

welllllll! she is moving from the big city to a county that only has about 3500 people in it, right now it is not worth the bother to phine company to make dsl avail. Satellite is avail, but after my bad experience with direcpc (I was probably their only customer here at one time), been a day or two ago. Went from downloading 10 mb of soundblaster programs/drovers at 4.74seconds to them dropping the download speed to 5k after I download a couple hundred mbytes (they said they wre limiting me) I took the dish down throwed it away and told them to take a hike. She is just gonna have to cry about the slow internet. Nothing can be done.

UPdate: Managed to get the old comp to run the late'est adaware program, found 304 ads/etc.... Now i've been able to run trend micro's house call, found 1 trojan, 9 instances of backdoor softeware and a couple other things. Got all that removed, but the machine still BSOD's. I dont have the old drivers, guess I'll try to download them from VIA.....

Before you go loading VIA's 4in1 drivers..why not try a repair first?..could be some of that adware or trojans corrupted a file or 2. There are other things that will cause 2K to blue screen on you...video drivers will do it, sound drivers as well...maybe remove the sound card, modem..anything else you can remove, go into 2K in safe mode and Device Manager, highlight and remove any ghost images...sure to be several of those...once you get all of the hard ware removed that you can..play with it a day or two..see if it still blue screens on you..even change the video card if you can..be sure to uninstall any video drivers first before applying new ones...

I've been at it a couple days with the machine now. I believe there is a virus and/or a trojan still on it because everytime i reboot it there is a different problem, windows runs chkdsk sometimes by it self(when booting) right now all it has attached is the video card and a external zoom modem so i can get it on the internet. sometimes it looses the zoom modem and installs a (unknown modem) when it reboots. It doesnt blue screen now
but when i run spybot 1.2 it bsod's there and reboots it self. I have the bios virus detector running also (doesnt seem to make much difference). last time I got it on internet tried to go to windows update, it wouldnt run that. Think there is more mal-ware on it, probably hiding in boot sector when I run virus detector.???????????
