Linux newbe

I'd like to experiment with Linux. I have virtually no knowledge about Linux so I'm asking for recommendations on which version to try first and links to sites where I can download.

Any and all advise will be appreciated.

Thanks

hello,
well suse 9 is getting rave reviews - i have liked redhat but i am not too sure about the fedora stuff. mandrake 9.2 has had less than stellar reviews...

i guess i would go with redhat 9 or mandrake 9.1 or suse 9. you could also try debian though it is not as automated as the afrementioned ones, but it is nice once you get used to it.

Try Knoppix .......... you can run it without installing onto your hardrive ....

Live Linux CD's - Versions - Run Linux from just your cd rom

The new releases on the mirrors for Mandrake 9.2 are fine if you want a nice easy to install distro, you can't go wrong to start........ SuSe 9.0 is really nice also, but it's not free.

I was using mandrake 9.1 for a while, and it was pretty easy. I'm thinking of getting redhat 9 soon, this also seems to be one of the most popular linux os' You can get linux from linuxiso.org, also www.linux.org is a good place to get help using linux

They may have it worked out by now, but I had font problems when running Gnome apps under KDE in Mandrake 9.2.

Well I also have had issues with Drake 9.2. I suggest trying SuSE or RedHat, which is what I use. For a first timer, go with SuSE, as some people prefer it over Drake and you may too!
