Is my pc DOA?

Just turned on my pc and got nothing!!!! Pc gets power although cd drive trays do not open, red hard drive light stays on,Blank monitor, no beeps, no sounds other than the fan.

It seems like the bios isn't doing its thing. Tried using a startup disk in drive a but pc does not access the drive.

If it's the bios can I replace just the chips? Do I have to replce the motherboard?

I have a amd athlon xp1700 and a kt266 chipset ddr atx motherboard.

Any help will be greatly appreciated.

TIA,
Jim

Try booting w/ just CPU, RAM, Video, and FDD.

Also, inspect the board and see if you see any swollen capacitors, especially around the CPU.

Evilrick,
Followed your instructions( I assumed FDD is my floppy) and now I have power to the cd drive and floppy but it did not access the startup disk when I tried it with it in. Still a blank screen, no beeps.

If the capacitors are the large cylindrical shaped components on the motherboard, some of the tops seem to be swollen or are not as flat as the other capacitors. Also I noticed a light brownish substance on them that was not just dust. Could they have "oozed" something?

sounds like my brothers computer after it was electrocuted (stupid brother left his computer plugged in while we were getting a new electrical line put in for air conditioning) fried his mobo, 2 of 3 cd drives, processor, and his memory.....

capacitors that are swoller are BAD!!!!
that does not look good for you

ABIT boards had some problems w/ bad caps a while back. I have a KT-7 RAID I'm still gonna resolder some back on. I've only ever had the problem on an MSI board.

You could probably try desoldering the old and soldering new ones back on there. RadioShack probably carries replacements. Just make sure you don't get smaller than what you have. They're probably 1500uf or 2200uf @ 6.3v. If I'm not mistaken, they carry some 2200uf @ 10v which will do just fine.

Either way, your board is no good.

Here's a step-by-step on a VP6, but the steps are pretty much the same w/ all mobos.

Thanks everyone for all your help.

The problem was the capacitors. After replacing the six that were bulging and oozing I was able to get the pc working but it would still shut down unexpectedly. After I replaced the other eleven on the mobo the thing works like brand new. Total cost $20 for caps and shipping.

Did you DIY or have it done?

Where'd you get the caps?

Details . . .

Did it myself. Took about an 1 1/2 hours.

Finally found the caps at Digi-key.com

Thanks evilrick for pointing me in the right direction. You're not so evil after all !
