Sorry-missed that in your earlier post...
Is the 80g that XP can't see logical or primary?
Couple other things to check...
In PM8, when you check the properties of the 80g partition, is it listed as hidden? If so, you can change that via the advanced tab in the context menu.
Also, do you have any TSR programs running? If unsure, try booting into safe mode (F8 on startup) and see if the partition is recognized.

I've converted it back and forth from logical to primary, ntfs to fat, formatted and all those operations work. It just doesn't get a drive letter. When I try to assign it one, I get the error. I did try starting in safe mode and unchecked most of the stuff in msconfig. Still no joy.
I've managed to make things worse.I thought I'd just merge the 2 onto one drive then separate them out again. Now the machine won't boot. It gets part way there and reboots. Tried to repair it with the XP disk and that didn't help. It gets part way through the process and stops like its waiting for something. In normal and safe mode. The HD light is on solid. Might be time to wipe the drive and start over.

Did you make the PM8 rescue disks? If so, you should be able to boot with them and possibly fix the unsuccessful merge operation.
Could save you having to start over, or at least get you up and running long enough to save data to CD or DVD...
FYI-I've used PM8 since it came out (actually, used PM7 when it first came out as well) and I've learned (the hard way,of course) not to make any partition changes if there is an ongoing error of any kind. I've lost all the data on my hard drives a few times (fortunately I back things up on CDs and DVDs-after the first time, anyway) and recovering that data can be a real chore...

No floppy in this machine. No rescue disks. I'e been living on the edge and flirting with disaster, sort of. Well, its about time to get started on the re-install.

Lets talk about the re-install first.

If you are going to partition again, I would suggest when you re install your o/s you do it all on one partition. Then put PM on next and then make your paritions.

Look into PM's web site and see if there is a way to make a rescue CD. There's got to be a plan by now! When you start getting fancy with PM things seem to go wrong too often! (Am I preaching to the choir? )

Here's a link for you:

Sound complicated, but necessary.

I have learned the hard way now and your arguement is valid. Turn that pulpit around preacher. I am now part of the choir.

Good Call Chuckie-and BTW, if there is no rescue CD, a $3 investment in a floppy drive can save you HOURS of trouble. They recommend the rescue disks for a reason.
If you're going to format and re-install, you don't even need PM8. You'd get the same effect partitioning through DOS...

I hope you made a rescue disk or you may be in the same boat I was.
