XP Pro not networking

I am trying to network two computers at a friends business (eventually multiple). They are running:
AMD Duron 1.3GHz processors
Biostar M7VIQ Mobo's
512MB ram
WinXP Pro

One PC (the on I'm on) is connected to the internet via a DSL connection that is connected to a SMC EZSwitch 10/100 router.

The router is showing the other PC connected, but it will not show it as networked on this PC and visa-versa. I have a "home or small business" network setup, but only this main PC will connect online. Neither will read the other through the network.

Suggestions? Help?

What is the exact model of the router? Are you sure this is a Router and not just a swithc? Are both machines using the same workgroup? How do you pc's get their IP addresses? DHCP from the router or static (you manually give each pc the ip info?

well I'm not at the office at the moment, so I can't check the switch.... both machines are using the same workgroup and they detect the IP automatically and seem to do that just fine.

Just run the Network Setup Wizard through Control Panel and remember to choose the same Domain (MSHOME) for all machines. I have a similiar setup networked (3PCS, one router and one cable connection) and all 3 PCs share the same connection.

Also try releasing and renewing the IP addresses on both machines

ok I did that... everything went good on the main PC, but on a secondary PC I only got the IP address and Subnet Mask to list. The Connection-Specific DNS Suffix and the Default Gateway listings were missing.. or blank rather.. and I'm not quite sure what that means

under the connection settings > TCP/IP properties > Advanced > Options... do I need to have TCP/IP Filtering Enabled?
