Website/business advice

Ok here's the deal I've been thinking about building a new site/homebased business something along the lines of RmDesigns. The questions I have are as follows

1. the domains I'd like is already in use {Rmdesigns.com rmdesign.comand both .nets are gone as well} so i thought maybe an RmDezigns

2. my business is basically just some basic webdesign for friends/family as well as a few small businesses and some computer work for some friends and family. Do I need to have a business license even if I don't need to have it would it be a good idea?

3. what kinda initial costs am i looking at? I'll do all the site setup and design with maybe a little help for some addons

4. I've also thought about setting up one of my computers to do my own hosting through a broadband connection. Are there any added costs to do this and what would be the drawbacks/benifets how much more work would this add

might have more questions to follow

Just a quick reply cuz I have 1 foot out the door.

"Do I need to have a business license even if I don't need to have it would it be a good idea?"-----Totally depends on local statutes etc...where I am I needed one..in the county they dont. Ask Arnold.

4. I've also thought about setting up one of my computers to do my own hosting through a broadband connection. Are there any added costs to do this and what would be the drawbacks/benifets how much more work would this add---------depends on your isp, if they even allow it. Overall though it may be more hassle than its worth etc.

good point about the isp I'd assume comcast would allow this but I'm not sure anyone know?

as for the business license i'm contacting sac county to see. I hope not because it will be 125+ for 3yrs

wow. a dba permit is 125? Only cost 20 for 4 years here in Orange, (Mass). I suppose thats because we charge so much more for everything else though...

hosting.. i would go with www.dot5hosting.com
I use them for the www.mabpa.com site (Mass. Business Professionals of America).

If you do all the set up and design it would just cost you very little for the initial set up.

Just make sure you aren't stepping on any copyrights.

As the others mentioned, it depends on your local laws.

Well, whatever you do only costs your time. As for the "Addons" you need to be more specific. The short answer--you are probably looking at very little expense.

Without dragging out the explanation I will just say that it isn't practical to host a "real" site from your home pc with only a broadband connection. This doesn't matter though because there are some excellent hosting deals out there.

here's what i got on my license info wich really sucks becuase I live between two incorporated cities but mine is not.

Quote:
If your home is located in the unincorporated area of Sacramento County (in
other words, not within the City limits of Sac, Elk Grove, Folsom or Citrus
Heights), you'll need a General Business License for your home-based business.
You'll need to file a Fictitious Business Name (FBN) statement if the business
name will not include your last name. For example, Smith Computer Repairs
would not need an FBN, Bob's Computer Repairs would
I'm going to have to contact the office directly for some clarification on the FBN as well as cost but basically what i get is I'll have to file for both to run a small lpart time in home business thats BS
