Dell 3500 Inspirion

I have a Dell 3500 laptop that wont come on. When I turn on the power the fan comes on for 3-4 seconds and shuts off, but the power indicator lamp stays on. I replaced the DC/DC board and nothing changed. I then proceeded to replace the CPU, after doing that it fired-up. I shut it down and put it back together.
after putting it together it started to do the same original problem. I took it back apart to make sure that the CPU was secure, while doing that I noticed the CPU was quit warm to the touch. I took the CPU out and made sure that it was securly installed, then turned back on. It would sometimes come on, but the CPU got hot. Anybody have an idea?

I'm not sure if this will be any help to you, but I had the exact problem with my desktop, I would switch it on, it would fire up, run for about 30-40 seconds then close down. Apparantly it was my CPU fan not working properly, so when the cpu got hot it would go into autosafe mode and shut down. The other problem I have experienced that is similar to yours was when my power on/off switch was faulty. The light would come on but the computer would not, I replaced both the switch and the wiring to the light and also to the m/board from the on/off switch and problem solved.
