type of HDD format on Windows 2000

What HDD format am I able to get Windows 2000 Pro to recognize? NTFS or FAT32? The reason I am asking is that I have an old Gigabyte mother board that has the 32GB restriction. The HDD I am trying to install is an IBM Deskstar 80GB 7200 RPM w/8MB cache. I supposeidly downloaded an update to my prevous BIOS, but I am still having trouble getting the BIOS to recognize the drive as primary master or as primary slave.

Any advice is much appreciated.

You should be able to use either NTFS or FAT 32. Have you checked the jumpers on the HDD? Are you useing the correct cable? (80 conductor cable)

What UB said.

Use the new IDE cable that came with the drive not the old one.

Until the BIOS sees it formatting is secondary.

You may have to use a controller card.

i contacted the maufacturer, Gigabyte, and they told me that this mother board has the limitation, not the BIOS. This board accepts up to 60GB. sorry for all the trouble i may have caused.

i guess its time to upgrade my mobo.

i appreciate all the help you gave.

no trouble at all. How much of the hard drive does windows recognize? Sometimes windows will see stuff that the bios doesnt. (but it does sound like an oldddd board, lol)> post back when you are ready to get another baord and someone can help you pick the best one for your needs.

Windows also only recognizes 32GB. what board would you recommend?I'm not sure if i should upgrade my cpu too. i would like to, but i'm thinking the PS might not be able to handle it, its a 110W. but if i were to upgrade the cpu, maybe a 1ghz. not sure.

the current processor is a Ciryix M-II 366MHz. i think something like a 100MHz bus??

all feedback is welcome.

what kind of stuff do you have now? what model gigabyte board? what cpu?

You know, you CAN get a nice pci IDE controller that will allow you to use your new drive.

Even something like this raud card http://www.dealsonic.com/syulata133id.html its $20 shipped....you can find em cheaper for instance without RAID (which you dont need)...I just couldnt find any right offhand.

Lots of people in this forum buy the big 160g and above drives and they come with controller cards that the people dont need. SO maybe you could luck up and find someone to ship you one for maybe $15 to $20.

wow, old stuff. What kind of case? is it AT or ATX? If its AT it has the big keyboard plug about the size of a nickel///atx has the smaller ps2 port about the size of an eraser head.

The board is a Gigabyte GA-5SMM with the SiS 530 Chipset. a Socket 7 Ciryix M-II 366MHz. What does a controller card do? the case is a pain in the you know what microATX

controller card just acts as an IDE controller....in your case it would "replace" the IDE controller on your motherboard cuz the one on your motherboard is too old for modern drives. They also come on handy for adding more hard drives or in case one of the controllers on your board fail.

You might be better off just saving up for a total upgrade.

A lot of it will depend on your case type.
