how to get google listings?

Hey, my friends mom just bought a company that sells cookie jars. The previous owners says it made about $60,000 a year. It was also ranked extremely high in google, which is important because the web is where most of there sales come from.

Now suddenly they are about 487 on a list, from 3rd where they were before (I'm not sure how the google rankign works). But my friend says the guy he bought it from was extremely mad at them for buying it for a really low price, and so my friend thinks hes sabatoged there rankings. He accessed the companies e-mail account even though he's not supposed to, and if he can access e-mail he can change site settings. So legall wise my friend has sent e-mails to the company to block the previous owner, and to the old owner to stop him, but there is the google listings issue. They've sold 1 cookie jar day before yesterday, non yesterday, and 1 today. Thats not going to make nearly enough to operate the company. Any way, so how do they increase google ranking? I'm guessing it has to do with links, anyone own a buisness or know about how to do this?

I'm really afraid his family is going to be in trouble if something doesn't get worked out.

BTW I was going to post a link to the website for people to see but I don't want to get in trouble with the mods. Is it ok? I seriously just want to know how to get them buisness.

Does he have access to the server where the site is located? If so, I would go and change all passwords for the hosting service.

Check the header info of all your pages to see if he put some kind of script in to block spiders and bots from logging your pages.

Change the passwords to the E-mail account.

What is the site address so I can take a peek at the source code.

Change all passwords that concern E-access of the business.

Oh and contact google and see if something has changed with your listing. He might have been paying for his ranking.

You can pay Google for ad space but you can't pay to get a better listing in the search results.

Yes you can give us the url for the site.

Also, you say they were listed at #3 prior to this. . . but #3 for what search word or phase?

Regardless... Google search results are compiled many ways. However, the most effective way is to get other people to link to the site. for instance. Here is a list of the sites that currently link to the CookieJarGifts website. A different website about Cookie Jars may link to the (CookieJarGifts.com). Google can make a good guess that a site about cookie jars is an authoritative source for links about them.

In short.. you want people with websites about CookieJars to link to the CookieJarGifts website.

ok, thats weird about the links. We had hundreds just a few days ago. Thanks for explaining that though.

Any one see anything wrong in the source that would suddenly stop so many peopel from linking with the cookiejar site?

You meta tags are way screwed up. Google is probably ignoring your site because of illegal entries in the meta tags.

There are limits to the number of characters allowed in specific meta tags. When you go over those limits Google will give you the cold shoulder.

A year ago the site's meta tags were totally different, and correct. Put it back to how it was.

I'm no pro at html code,but what a mess.
I've looked at many sites source code yours needs a major clean up.
Plus to me it just doesn't seem right.

Very basic,but I hope in order other then the double closing of the tags on the site link buttons.
It's a lazy way to not learn "tables" which I should,but lost interest.
