Of course. You'll either have to set a jumper on the mobo or change the FSB in the BIOS if it allows it. I'd say it's board specific, not so much CPU.

I'ts not that I want to underclock...

I have a chance of gettnig a p4 2.6ghz 800mhz, and I currently am running a p4 2.4 with 533mhz motherboard....

So I though I could just put it in for now... and use the p4 2.4 to build a PC for a friend....

Would that be too much trouble... changing the CPU, is it worth it?

or should I wait and buy an 800mhz Mobo?

think of it as trying to shoot water thru a hose, it can only have so much flowing thru it, so your mobo would be considered a bottleneck. The cpu should underclock automatically because it can only go as fast as the mobo and ram allow it to, ram right now is the main bottleneck in pc's

I know that... I just wanted to know if it would be too much trouible to change the cpu for the new one, since I don;t have a faster mobo... for now i meant.

Do it anyway. Then a new board will come along and youll be rockin! Besides....you can overclock the motherboard to see how close to the 200fsb that the new cpu wants.
