OpenOffice...XP..java??

I am installing Open Office on a fresh XP build.

I guess XP doesnt have java huh?...cuz the open office install cant find it.

Where can I get java from??

I used to use star office on installs and it would put java on there for you.

I believe that OpenOffice requires Suns Java runtime. Microsoft's doesn't work with it. IF I remember correctly. I ran into a similar problem months ago when I tried out OpenOffice.

Now that I have installed open office WITHOUT java...will it figure out that I added java?? Or do I have to go back and do something to get open office to see the java??

Once you've installed the Java, I think all you need to do is run jvmsetup.exe, which should be somewhere in your Open Office folder(s). This should take care of any $JAVA_HOME or $PATH settings.

12. Why does OpenOffice.org require Java at installation?

OpenOffice.org currently uses Java for:
* applets in html pages
* support of Java components

I installed Java runtime just because some web sites make use of it! But it doesn't hurt to have it becaue OO uses it also!

Well I have never really been clear about whether java was in XP or not by default. Seemes at one time or another the answer was yes and then no, lol.

But one of the first things I do with a new build after updates etc is go to www.chessclub.com and play "simple chess" using the java applet. The fresh build I did a few days ago wouldnt play it...so I figured right away it was a lack of java issue.

Anyway, I installed open office for the first time....had been using star office 5 before that. SO5 has a point where it aska bout java etc but it will then install the java for you. Open office got to that same point but the option to install java was greyed out??

So I got the java loaded...and then I just clicked on
"jvmsetup.exe" as pexster said and it re-ran that short part of the install.

I suppose Dell must put java on their systems cuz all my new Dells always play the chess site no problem.
