I know I may get laughed out of the forum, but I use the Staples brand and have had phenomenal results at a low price....I've used them with several burners (8 or 9), and can burn at 52x without problems.
*EDIT* Just checked empty boxes-I used to have the same burner(came boxed as a 48x with a note inside explaining the free upgrade). Never had a problem with Staples brand CD-R's...

Much appreciated Martoch-and in all honesty, I've found this forum to be acceptant of almost anyone's views, opinions, and preferences (not necessarily in agreement with, but acceptant of). Nice to see free speech in practice |

Most of us do not understand the technology behind reading and/or writing to a CD. It is based (in part) on the laser's ability to reflect an image back to the laser for processing. If the reflection (not too unlike a light shone in a mirror) is not properly reflected, the CDRW's circuits fail the self-check test, and the burn (or read) fails.
CD manufacturing is a huge (backyard) type business, and the larger CD sellers, (Verbatim, Maxwell, TDK, Memorex etc. etc. etc..) buy these blank disks and label them. Some are poor quality from the get-go and the reflectivity is borderline acceptable where 'work/no work' is the only criteria. These are what we buy in bulk at the discount stores.. usually, a good CDR, DVD or CDRW will read them when burned...after the laser gets a little age on it, failures begin..lasers are not forever...they do wear out.
The following website has a huge amount of good information concerning the good, the bad and the ugly of CD and the technology. As with most anything computer technology wise, reading and study is where its at. http://www.cdmediaworld.com/hardware/cdrom/cd.shtml |

I buy the cheapest I can find. Look, market practice is exactly like Bovon said...people bulk order the CD's and slap their factory label on them.
CD's aren't spun in many places anyway, from what I understand.
