can I do this

take a game like halo and you know when you install it it needs a cd key now after installing it you find that your girlfriend or someone is spending more time on it than you are leaving you wanting to play it but can't. Now you go out to a used game place and purchace a used copy of halo only to find out that it has a scratch in it and you can't install it on there computer. now here is my question, you got the one you purchased new, can you make a copy of that one and use it to install it on the other machine with the cd key from the used copy you purchased. I was wondering cause if you need more licences for win xp or so you could purchase it from microsoft but once it is installed you dont need the cd any more but with programs like halo when you do need the cd can you do this. trying to save some money by not purchasing new copies of games like halo since you got most of your information in the one you purchased.

See if I can shorten this up
I puchase halo from wal-mart
you purchase halo from wal-mart
you sell me your copy of halo with original cd key but didn't tell me it is to damaged to work.
take my copy of halo make a copy of it and use your cd key.

Seems it would work..unless they do some sort of "activation" like XP does. I am pretty sure that all the cd's themselves are identical.

Using replacement media to install/run a game (or software) you legally have rights too would generally be accepted. In each case you should consult the actual license agreement to be sure.

It'd be no different than if you copied the other CD before it got damaged. That's the point of making a copy.

So, to answer your question, there's nothing wrong w/ you making a copy of yours to replace the damaged copy you bought. As far as anybody's concerned, you made the copy before it was damaged.

and, that CD key is like your legal license. Since you have two original CD keys it's the same as having two licenses.

Usually when you find out a CD you just bought (either new or used) in a store is scratched and doesn't work, you return it. If that doesn't work for you, call or email Microsoft and ask for a replacement.

But I suppose as long as you own the original CD (scratched or not), there's nothing wrong with having a copy of it or another identical CD.

often companies offer the opportunity to replace bad media for a small charge, I think shipping and the processing fee...
