8X AGP card, 4X AGP board

i have got a 4X AGP motherboard, and i was wondering if an 8X AGP card would still run on this board??

thanks

Yes, but it will run at 4x. Under the majority of circumstances, the 4x AGP slot will not be rate-limiting to your video performance.

You are unlikely to notice the difference unless all of your components, CPU, RAM, etc., are all the latest and fastest.

Any AGP card should fit any AGP slot.

AGP 8x and 4x gear are ALWAYS compatible, mechanically, electrically, and logically. And unless you're doing professional 3D rendering work there, there's no performance difference either.

The "slots" you see in AGP cards are the key notches for the signalling voltage compatibility. AGP slots may carry a blocking tab for "no 3.3V signalling" and another for "no 1.5V signalling". Cards go in only if they have a corresponding notch.

So a "universal" card (two notches) fits all kinds of mainboards, while "1.5V-only" and "3.3V-only" cards fit into compatible slots only. A "universal" mainboard slot (no tabs) fits all cards, likewise.
