Windows 98 SE install.

I am trying to install windows 98 SE on a computer, it has Windows 95 already installed on it. When i put in the Win 98 SE boot disk, i get the message that it has loaded tools on to drive, i select load with CD assistance, thats ok so far.

According t o the instructions in my magazine i should then get an A:/ prompt, With a flashing curser, i get that ok but the instructions say that just above the A:/ prompt i should get a message reading some thing like - A:/ will begin drive ?: = Driver BANNA unit

with the explanation that the letter that follows Drive , be it f, r or X has been arbitrarily assigned to your CD ROM. But i am not getting any such message i have tried typing in C:/ - D:/ and E:/ then hitting enter but all i get is this message (Bad command )

Can any one tell me what i should try next?

Thanks in advance.

First. See if your system can boot from CD. That would make everything easier.
If it can't then do one of the following:
1) Use a bootdisk from www.bootdisk.com
The site contains instructions on how to get everything working. I never figured out those MS OEM boot disks. They never seemed to work correctly. I just made one manually, but maybe if you haven't used much DOS then it may not be an option.
2) If you're not planning on formatting the hard disk, copy the win98 directory from the cd to somewhere on the hard disk. (i.e. c:\win98)
reboot and press F8 as windows starts loading to give you that little menu thing. Select "safe mode command prompt only"
When you get to the c:\> prompt, type:
Code:
cd \win98
setup
and setup should start.

First off, are you trying to format the drive first..or are you just going to upgrade over the existing windows??

If he is going to upgrade cant he just boot into regular W95 and start the install from there??

In that case I would just download a w98 bootdisk from www.bootdisk.com like nukes said.

I would go there and get this one------"Windows 98 SE Custom, No Ramdrive"

Then just boot to the floppy.

Personally I would take the time to run fdisk and redo the partitions while I was at it. How big is the hard drive?

well if it is only that small of a drive I dont think you need to run fdisk in this case.

Just boot off of the floppy and run "format a: /q"

that will format it...it may ask for a volume name blah blah..just click enter.

And I dont think you even need to reboot after that.

The d:\ should be your cd...so after the format you are still sitting on the "a:\" so just type d:\ and then type "cd win98"

then type "setup"

and you should be off and running.
