Need help pls

In my aun't computer, I get an error

Windows has detected a Registry/Configuration error
Choose, Command Prompt only, and run SCANREG

I tried all of the options but nothing happens, How can I fix this, I need help pls, seems like a file required to run windows was delected. [windows98] I was gonna install xp but this error came up.

Click Start / Shutdown and Restart the computer in MS-DOS mode.

At the prompt type:
scanreg and hit enter.

Sit back and relax.

If you were going to install install XP anyways. It shouldn't be a problem to load up if you have the disc. Dont do this unless you want to lose ALL the
data that is on your PC now.
You might end up having to reload your OS anyways. Maybe. If the registry got messed and ScanREG didn't work.
Only do this as a last resort. Easier to fix as mentioned by others allready

I can't click START/SHUTDOWN.... I get that error before starting windows.

As dlh75 said, you could just install XP over top.

If you want to proceed with the scanreg in Win98, reboot holding down your Ctrl key and you should get the Start Menu.

Choose Comand Prompt Only from the options.

I would try the fix first. How much memory does this computer have? Is this a branded PC ie Compaq,IMB,Dell or HP. If so these have restore disc that come with them if you still have them. Just saying XP might not work so good on an older system. You would need to have enough ram installed. If you didn't know that allready. Just tring to help.

Try what Beemer suggested. It works if you hold down Ctrl after you reboot.

ummm the windows xp cd I have is downloaded from kazaa, and it doesn't run, only when windows has started. probably something wrong I did while burning the cd, something I could do so it can run before windows start like the real cd?

Try buying a retail copy from a store instead of pirating a copy from kazaa. Theres your problem.
