the sound wire (s)(?)

K, it's the end of my build, and now I'm stumped.

I've spiral loomed all the power wires and tucked everything in real nice, used round cables, cut holes in the case and re distributed the fanage all of them are now on a controller, used a filtered "baycooler" in front of my HDD and do expect cool air to come in there because I have three exhaust fans -including the PSU- and only two intake fans (all of them are 80mm). All in all it seems like a clean box.

But I've a DVD player and a CDROM. I usually leave some music on when I'm doing other things on the PC. or in my room with the PC idle. but the last thing I'm doing is putting in the wire that goes from my CD OR my DVD player to the Mobo on the connector labeled "CD1" I gotr my other sound wire out and start looking for "CD2" ......

....and guess what ???? There isn't one !!!!!!!! (or should I say there aren't two places to hook up a sound wire?)

Can I wire them both together ??? Series? Parallel ?

Mobo is:

ECS Elitegroup
L4VXA2
ViaP4x400
P4 FSB 533

If you enable Digital Audio for both of your CD/DVD drives, you don't need no stinkin' wire...

In XP...
Right-click "My Computer" Select "Properties". Click the "Hardware" tab, and click the "Device Manager" button. Then open up the properties for both your CD and your DVD drives. And go to the "Properties" tab, and check the box that says, "Enable digital CD audio for this CD-ROM device"

HTH,

David

You dont HAVE to have a wire on there..especially for XP. It can pick the sound up through the IDE cable. There was a setting on ME and maybe 98..something like "allow digital playback for this drive" or something vageuly similar.

I dont think youll need an audio cable on either of them.

Actually, you really dont need to connect that wire. The sound will be played through the rounded IDE cable. I'm not sure what that wire is truly needed for. Maybe someone else can fill us in on that.

Edit: Dang, I'm getting slow in my old age!!!

Wire used to be needed in win 3 and 95. Now no one uses it. Just throw it away.

Really ?!?!?!?!?

I never knew that. I sure hope it is available in Win`98 cause that's what I use. I'll do a search ...... when I fire this puppy up and see, I'll let y'all know what I find.

If it's not in your System Properties like I suggested above, look in the Control Panel under the "Multimedia" icon.

Also, there might be those types of setting in your media player...

(BTW, this is one of the first times that I actually beat other folks!!! Normally I come in last, for one thing I type up longer posts, and go into detail, for another thing, I'm not the fastest typer in the west...) ...or East, North, South... etc...

Are you all sure that it's not needed? Without that wire I can't hear audio CDs play through my CDROM?
