Who knows of a good Document Management System??

Does anyone know of a good web-based document management system? Or a web-based file manager type system for a remote filesystem?

I'm basically doing my dissertation for uni at the moment, and i would like to keep copies of my latest files (and old versions) that i'm working on, at a remote location which i can access anywhere.

The two obvious, but not perfect, options are:

1. Emailing the files to myself the whole time.

2. FTPing the files to my server the whole time.

there must be a better way. most of my documents are word/staroffice documents, and i just want either easy web-based access to a filesystem (which has no problems running thru a proxy and firewall, like IE's FTP feature does) or a full-on document management system.

any ideas ppl???

Also... do u know of examples i could test online of any ideas you suggest?

I use a HTTP-based file upload system to provide a remote, centralized file storage point. All you need a host with CGI or PHP support. I simply use the free version of Invision Power File Manager, a PHP coded web app. Ignore the part about requiring MySQL if you are not interested in database management.

I also recommend skimming through the list of web apps available here....

Or if you are really lazy (like myself), then why not opt for a free online file storage service....

this is absolutely brilliant!! i have one question though...

i had to set the root directory to chmod 777... is this not a good idea if multiple people have access to the machine?? the files within that directory are owned by the web server user, and only the web server has read/write access, but everyone still have access to the main folder... surely this isn't a good idea... am i wrong?
