I am fixing a Compaq Presario 1705 laptop for this guy. The laptop was running extremely slow and was cluttered with a bunch of spyware and useless programs. I put in a Windows 98 second edition CD and reformatted it. What I did was copy the files to the hard drive and then ran the setup file. One thing I noticed right away was that the files were copying slowly. That didn't bother me much because I knew that the laptop was old. I installed Windows 98 and everything went smoothly until the final restart at which point the the screen had power going to it but there was no image. After toggling with the monitor/LCD function key I discovered that if I plug in a monitor the image will come up on the monitor but what I switch back to the LCD nothing happens. Also when I tried installing Office 2000 the installation would freeze at about a quarter way through. The two major problems that I have are that the CD ROM won't read any CD properly and that the LCD won't function properly without the monitor. If anybody could help I would really appreciate it!!!
It is a really old laptop....under Windows Device Manager everything showed up normal except the modem but i got drivers for the modem, althought i haven't tested them yet. I was thinking it could be hardware but it's the strangest problem i have ever had. I installed Office 2k and other small apps of a pcmcia cd rom that i have the onboard won't read anything properly
IDK i did not take it apart or anything... but it's weird i have noo clue what the problem. Thanks for the memory tester the memory seems to be fine. Do you think it could be something in the BIOS? maybe it is physical since sometimes i don't see the COMPAQ sign when i first turn it on
