Where's my free memory?

Hello. I have 512MB DDRRAM in my WindowsXP PC, but I don't know where half of it went:

Both Cacheman and Windows Task Manager report 512MB total memory, but only 178MB free, meaning that I'm using 338MB. However, if I check on my processes, I've got IE with 31MB, explorer with 16MB, and about 10 others between 1 and 8MB. Total can't be more than 100MB. Even with system resources, I don't know where it all went. Usually on a clean boot I'll have 325MB or so free via cacheman, but I can't free up any more now, and I don't have that much running.

My machine has only been running a couple days since reboot, and I haven't run that much. This seems to happen a lot, especially if I'm running a few torrents (sharing legal data, of course ). The torrent prog will say it's using about 50MB max, but I'm done to 40MB free, meaning I'm using 475MB. Ugh.

Anyway, is there a better program I can use to track this usage, and, if I still can't find the problem easily, are there any other possible causes of my problems? Thanks.

Keeping in mind that "unused" ram is wasted ram...

Try rebooting and check the numbers again.

Well, when I reboot I'm fine. I just want to know where it goes when I've got nothing open and it's not at its max...

Many programs and or Operating Systems "leak" memory. Where it goes I have no idea. But rebooting cues a lot of issues..

It's probably memory that has been used in previous processes but not released and given back to the OS. I believe the M$ OS's are renouned for this and Me was supposed to be the worst one. Have you tried RamBooster yet?

http://beemerworld.com/tips/disabledllcache.htm does the same as RamBoost without a program.

Cheers!

Well, XP was supposed to fix this, and I have Cacheman, and I've never encountered this before...

Anyway, I'll try the progs tonight. Thanks.
