MailTo links Freakout

Here's one for the books. I am not sure when this started probably within the last week or so. Whenever I click on a Mailto link I get between 50 and 73 Internet Explorer windows all with the mailto:***@***.*** in the address bar. I have reinstalled IE 6.0 and outlook express, set all settings in both to default. I ran Spybot search and Destroy, and Adaware 6. I am running Windows 2000 Professional with SP 4 and all the critical updates. I run Norton Anti-virus Corporate version 7.5 scans every night. The only thing I noticed a few days ago I clicked a mailto link and a message poped up stating I didn't have any program that could send mail from the internet? I can't recall installing any new software but that doesn't mean I didn't. Google wasn't any help (might be the search terms I used), M$ Knowledge Base also no help. This happens in IE, Flashpeak Slimbrowser, and links in Outlook Express. Standard http links work fine. Anybody???

Try...

Control Panel -> Internet Options -> click the "Programs" tab

In the 'E-mail:' dropdown box, choose OutlookExpress (or whatever your mail program happens to be.)

See if that helps any.

Nice call. I forgot to check there. I have nothing listed and cannot enter anything. I have Outlook express set as my default mail program in it's options. Maybe I will install Outlook and set it as the default then switch back. I will post results later.

Well if Outlook is set as the default Mail Program then the mailto links work fine. I still cannot set outlook express as my default but I can still use it for mail and everything seems to work OK. Thanks for the help.
