Athlon not able to overclock?!?!!?

it is really true that Athlon's are now locked??? I am looking to get the 2500+ to overclock to 3000+ and now i am hearing rumors that if i buy the cpu now that it will be locked and cannot overclock. I am looking to get the asus A7N8X Deluxe to get the most from overlocking and my CPU.
can someone shed some light on this subject

KiLLaJ17...

I have exactly the same components that you are interested in and I have overclocked to a XP3200+ with no problems (you need a good HS and Fan).

I bought my parts about 6 months ago but I do not know about whether they are going to be locked now.

billniceguy...

How come you don't like overcloking?

KillaJ17,

AMD is locking the multipliers on the XP2500, but there is no need to worry.
Almost all XP2500 will do 400Mhz fsb easy, so just set yer fsb to 400, up the voltage a bit and voila, ya got yerself a nice XP3200.

Never overclock Billniceguy?? LOL that's a good one.

My motto is more the other way around, something along the lines of:

NEVER RUN @ DEFAULT.

Even if the XP 2500+ were locked, the A7N8X automatically unlocks it with it's nForce 2 chipset. This is true of most nForce 2 boards, afaik.

JohnE,

that is true for the normal ones.

Even nForce2 chipset will not be able to override this lock, this is a definate lock, just like the Intel multiplier lock.

Abso-bloomin'-lutely agree...
Billniceguy...
I haven't had a PC run at default speed since my 486DX2/66 in the early '90s
P-II 300@333
K6-II 350 @ 400
Slot-A Athlon 700@850 ("golden fingers" device)
T-Bird 1.2/200@1.4/266
Palomino 2100+ @ 1867
T-Bred 1800+ @ 2000
T-Bred 2700+ @ 2340
P-4 1.6 @ 2.134
Barton 2500+ @ 2124

Every one of these CPUs has been run at 100% CPU output from Day 1 (usually SETI@home). Never had one "burn out"... have sold a few of the above to some folks (kept the 1.2/1.4 T-Bird and XP2700+ as B/U CPUs for my systems).
