xp home bogging down

my friend has a new hp with xp home on it and i noticed how the computer, especially on the internet, boggs down alot. for instance, as i'm typing this very thread, when i backspace and hold down the button, it looks like nothing is happening but suddenly all the words are erase, meaning it's really slow. he has an optical mouse and when you use the wheel on the mouse it lags behind when you scroll down or up. i defragged the hdd but that didn't help, what else can i do?

spec's:

amd 2000+
512 ddr (don't know the speed of the ram)
32mb Nvidia Nforce 220 (onboard gc?)
cdrw 24x10x40
dvd drive

there are many ways to speed it up actually...many time windows bogs down due to spyware... Spybot is good for routing it out and blocking many as well.
XP Smoker is a good program for tweaking the settings to speed things up as well.

Most of the store bought computers have a lot of small programs loaded at startup. You might want to go through the list in msconfig>statrup and uncheck the ones that are not needed.

tools > internet options > temporary internet files > delete files .... then click settings and make the holding size smaller , like 80MB ...In addition to the already posted fixes , may help .
Good Luck .
