DVD+r/+rw burn speed limitations?

Well I just finished getting a computer put together for my dad, has a plextor 708A 8x DVD+R / 4x DVD+RW etc etc( 4x/2x for -r and -rw). Anyhow, I went to sams club and picked up a pack of 50 DVD+r's, only brand that they had. At first i was surprised by the price (60 dollars), but on with the issue.

I got it home and opened it up and decided to try it out.

I ended up working on a dvd project and then going to the burn feature, under write speed it only listed 2.4x, of course I was like WTF is going on here, its sopposed to go at 8x. Then I tried looking at it with the same media in roxio and nero, both of which had a max of 2.4x.

Then I look at the package of dvds... in small print on the label it notes that its 1x-2.4x media.

Is there any way to override the cap on the media, such that the software will burn at higher speeds regardless?

Mainly, using Roxio Easy CDand DVD Creator 6 Home. (Or I can use Nero 6 if I have to).

I also remember reading awhile back on cnet, when they were reviewing an 8x dvd burner and mentioned no 8x dvd media is on the market, but it burnt at 8x with 4x media just fine. So obviously there must be a way to burn at faster speeds, im just curious how

Any help appreciated, thx

Good luck on finding 8x media locally the best I can find is 4x at staples

BTW I don't think you can burn faster then the disk is rated sorry.

I beleive if you look round the net you can find a way to burn faster then a CD is rated, but its not a good idea as it will probably end up unreadable anyway.

Yeah, definatly not a good idea even if you do find a workaround. DVDR's are still a little on the pricey side (averaging about $2 each) and you don't want to be wasting that making coasters. 8x media is not only hard to find, but considerably more expensive than their 4x counterparts.

It doesn't take such a long time to burn at 2.4x anyway (it's not like with cd media that 1x=300kbs )

The sony dru510 I have is supposed to burn at 4x (dvd-r), but I only have 2x media - which burns in ~30minutes.

true that u can't really burn faster than ur midea can afford, but I did heard once u can make it burn faster than default and as someone said above me, its not safe and u might get some coasters. I would say buy the 4x media or wait for the 8x to come out, in the mean time, just use whatever u have and enjoy it
