Low Speed internet (Phone line probs)

I Have some friends that live out in the country. I have tried their computers here at my house and I can get on internet just fine with them (we use 56K modems around here) but at their homes the machines either connect and then get disconnected or they dont connect at all. Is there any equip I can (borrow or purchase(not to high)) to check the quality of the phone lines from their home's downline to the phone company.

Have the phone co. check the line, that's what you pay for... if they are really far out they may be on carrier.. sometimes dial up internet not so compatable with subscriber carrier!
