installing 95 having problems....

A friend of mine is giving me an old comp as payment for building him The Demon its an HP with a 1Ghz celeron....not really sure of anything else. but i was gonna install 98 on it instead of the XP which is allready there in order to install 98(upgrade) i had to install 95 first. In order to do that i have to boot from floppy but everytime i tray it says this thing has a newer version of dos. thhis guy has no boot disks or anything. so is there a way i could just format it and install 95??

edit I'm giving this rig to my brother and he has some older games like need for speed 3 and slave zero that require 98 they aren't compatible with NT based windows

Which version of 95? is it 95 OSR2? That was the last version of 95 that had USB support. have you tried booting from teh 95 CD?

Also, if you have a 2000 or XP CD, you could boot to one of them and use the first part of the setup to delete the partition on the hard drive. Once that is done you can use the 95 disk to repartition the drive and install 95.

What is on the floppy you are booting from? You should have the option to boot to A: on the floppy. Does the floppy have fdisk on it?

I know i kindof bounced around there, sorry. Coffee not working yet.

Yes, you need to boot from a bootable floppy with a basic system and format on it and format the drive from there. My guess is that you are trying to boot a '95 install disk which isn't allowing you to install windows because it already detects an operating system.

Try one of the flavours available at: http://www.bootdisk.com/
Cheers,
Elad.

BTW ... I'd suggest 98SE. It tends to be a bit more stable and has more and newer default drivers.

Come to think of it, you should be able to boot from '98 se and do the format from there (just choose to start dos with cdrom drivers and not to start setup ...)

Use a W98se boot disk (www.bootdisk.com) for CD-ROM support, FDISK and FORMAT hard drive as desired. Start W98se install from W98se Upgrade CD... you will be prompted to insert W95 CD as proof of update status (you shouldn't really need to actually have W95 physically installed).

uhh, on an upgrade you dont HAVE to install the old one first..you just start the upgrade and it'll ask for a "qualifying product" at which point you point it to the w95 floppy (or probably just to the upgarde cd itself, lol)
