Mobo shutdown --> CPU overheat?

Well I'm tinkling with my new PC, everything's here except the CPU-cooler.
It's a AMD 2400+ with MSI K7N2-Delta L mobo (auto shutdown when overheats).

So I've attached everything, and then I switch it on without the cooler just to see whether it will boot or not. The casing power LED lights on for around 1.5 seconds and then the mobo shuts off. That includes the casing fan (which is attached to the mobo) and the graphics card fan.

I will then have to wait for 10 seconds before I can power it on again.

My question is, is this because I have not yet installed the CPU-cooler and it is overheating? Well I would understand that, but JUST after 1.5 seconds? Does the CPU really overheats so quickly? I had expected it boot until the BIOS setup page.

Oh and second question:

I bought a second casing fan as well, and problem is, there is only one 3-pin plug in the mobo for the casing fan. The other 3-pin plug is for the CPU fan, so I can't use that as well...
What should I do?

Ya, they heat up that quickly. Never ever ever ever ever ever ever turn a machine on without a fan SECURELY attached to the CPU. You may have already smoked that chip. I sure hope not, but...

That board HAS to have more than two fan headers. Good grief. But if it doesn't, you can get adapters that go from molex (the big plastic hard drive/cd-rom connectors) to fan power three pin. I've got a few floating around that came with random stuff I've got.

So sad to hear this. You will be very very lucky it you have not wasted the cpu.

All Athlon's cannot live without a heatsink, not even for a second.

FYI... If you look at the info that comes with the cpu it states that clearly.

Live and learn I guess.

Whuh... what???

You guys are kidding aren't you?
I burned my AMD processor? But I haven't even used it yet!! Damn, but the processor looks fine though.

Ah, I'll just have to wait for the CPU-fan to arrive and then I'll know for sure. If it is really burned, I'll just get it changed (2 year warranty).

How about the casing fan thing though? Any ideas?

For the case fan you can buy an adapter to go on your PSU plugs

Eeek! It takes about 5 seconds from power on to total (literally) smoking self-destruct for an AMD without an adequate heat sink and fan. Hope it ain't toast.

I feel sorry about your (probable) loss, but how could you in good conscience even consider a warranty claim when you knowingly did something that AMD EXPRESSLY SAYS NOT TO DO?

If that CPU is toasted, you have only your self to fault. AMD did not do anything to warrant taking the hit.
