Trouble extracting .cab files

I'm having trouble extracting the odd .cab file when I'm installing something. I've tried this on other peoples computers from CD and harddrive. It works for friends. I tried uninstalling WinZip and installing CompreXX to see if that helped.
Also, .pak files and .rez files won't extract properly. You probably know these are compressed files used in games. The installers just won't finish properly. Again, not on all games, and the games work fine on friends computers. Generally things won't extract properly, but normal .zip files are fine. Any ideas wise ones?

System:
Windows XP Home Edition
P4 1.8Ghz Processor
1 Gb RAM
GForce FX5200
Onboard AC97 Sound

Are you getting errors or is it just stopping in the middle of what it's doing? Do you have a virus program running when you do this?

It stops at the end and says its not the expected filesize usually.
I've also tried doing the same thing with Norton disabled.
