Why does comp power off and power on for no reason?

Hey i recently got a new ATX case for my amd athlon 3000xp this case has a special feature that displays the cpu temp on the front for some reason it registers it at around 265 celcius which is totally wrong because in bios its only around 55 celcius. i think im having a prob with this because whenever i play halflife or one of the mods after about 20 minutes of playing my computer makes a warning siganl and powers off i have no idea why but im thinking its because of the sensor on the box that is diplaying the wrong cpu temp. Any ideas?????????

I think your computer is overheating.!

You are saying that the BIOS displays 55C when idle (i.e. not running any games or anything cpu-intensive)?
If so, that's a little on the high side.

Well the sensor might be not plugged in right?
Also 55c is running a bit hot, my computer is set to warn me if i reach over 54c.
However this is likely different with yours, but you might be experiencing a computer crash from running at this temp.
If you don't want to not reduce the life of your cpu, I would suggest getting some arctic silver 5 and a new fan. www.zalmanusa.com
This one is probably the best quietest fan you can purchase

Hmm just read your post above, if you have a volcano 9, is your fan spinning at full speed, or plugged into the power or motherboard?
Maybe your better change around your heat sensors and make sure they are properly arranged to spin at full speed.

That is your problem if i'm not mistaken, place it under the cpu or near it or your fan will spin too slow.

Try to play another game and see if it turns off also.!
If it does, then it has to be a heating issue.!
Games use the cpu and video card at higher levels so maybe the PC is not turning off when you are using powerpoint but it will turn off when playing a game.!

Also, check if in your BIOS you have a setting for the machine to turn off autmatically when it reaches a certain temperature.! You can change this if it lets you but I don't think it will be a wise choice.

These sensors report the temp, if you get it properly installed the fan goes faster depending on temp.
However it's reporting improperly, I hope you can install this correctly and see how much better it goes. This should likely fix your problem as it shouldn't be over heating and yes this is too hot for any cpu.
Well atleast running quite on edge and isn't good.
