Kids 4x AGP cards and lower in 8x AGP slot

I just bought a Shuttle AN35 Ultra board from the Egg and I am trying to figure out what the story is on using 4X and lower cards in a mobo that is either 8x or 8x/4x.

I'd don't understand in which direction "backward compatibility" goes vis a vis the numbers and I am also concerned about differences in voltage. Are the 8x AGP slot designed mobo designed to spit out less juice than the 4x and less mobos need?

I tried to decipher a chart on compliance and had to reach for the Advil.

TIA

that shuttle mobo supports 8x (0.8V) as well as 4x (1.5V).

it is also agp-proof which means even if you plug in a 3.3v (2x) card, it will not damage anything...
