Kids Installing Divx codecs

Can anyone walk me throught it? I DL'd the Linux files and typed "sh install.sh" from the root prompt but Mplayer still won't play. Also, to have the most up-to-date version of Mplayer, is DL'ing and installing all the codecs sufficient? Any help appreciated.

BTW, I'm looking forward to Suse 9.0!!! I've been a Suse fan for a few versions now.

i have a problem in playing some of my downloaded footages from the net.
when i played it, it is said that it could not playback the what codec whatever, and just sounds that i hear. could it be the codec? quite a number 1 or 2 footage as well, a message i receive saying incorrect decompressor....something like that.

do i really need to update my codec often? if so, where can i get it download for mplayer and divX?

*.avi, *.divx, *.xvid (??), *.wmv..are the usual format that i have problem with

I have been to a divX site for the codec and there are too many to choose from. id like to ask you guys, for a straight download link from here, if available. Thanks in advance.

You can get Xvid at http://www.xvid.org/ . Works with Linux.

WMVs is a proprietary Windows format. Hence, about the only way I can find to play them is to run Window Media Player 6 through WINE or crossover (make sure to get version 6.4).

For Divx for Linux:
http://www.divx.com/divx/linux/

Really? Hmmm....I've never been able to.

Lemme try it (just installed mplayer again).

Oh, I see. I didn't install the right codecs

Oh...my...god! This sinches it.

Linux is now my primary OS!

I must have been using a really old version of mplayer. This is the first time I've gotten DVD playback to work.

Oh, BTW, anyone know how to get DVD menus to work?

I DL'd all of the win32 codecs I could find but I'm still not having any luck. I tried the newest version of Mplayer in an RPM but it gives me missing dependencies for the codecs that I already have and other needed items. I'm taking a look at Xine now. I got all of it last night and I'm going to give it a try today or tomorrow. I still need an AC3 codec for vob playback. I'm still somewhat new to installing things in Linux and this is getting a little frustrating. I'm using Suse 8.2 right now and because of legalities, etc. it's got the dumbed down versions of Mplayer and Xine. Trying to make them smart is killing me.
