help setting up network

Hello new to this kind of stuff.
I just recieved an older PC from my work. I was wondering how can I set it up so I can transfer files to my other PC as well as surf the internet. I have read about ICS. Would this work? Want to keep cost down. Both PC's have a NIC card installed. Also My main box is running XP home and the older one is 98 SE. Problem?
Any help would be great.

You could install Apache and just put all the files you wanted to transfer in the htdocs folder. Or download VNC, that allows you install it on computer and now you can access that anywhere by just using a small vnc viewer file. Ooh a fellow Houstonian.

"both cards have a nic".

What kind of internet connection do you have on the xp box?

If its dialup then all you need is a crossover cable to hook the 2 nics together.

If the xp machine is using the nic already for cable internet then you need another nic in it to use for ics.

Then basically all you do is go to the start menu-- "all programs/accesories/communications/network setup wizard"

Then you need to run the xp cd in the W98 machine....you will see it say "additional tasks" (or something like that)...and one of the tasks is to run the networking wizard....so you run that on the 98 machine and it gets it ready for ics.

Another option is to just buy a router. Thats what I would do personally. Less hassle really...plus that way BOTH machines are somewhat "hidden" from the internet. And the xp machine doesnt have to be on for the 98 machine to get online.

There's a belkin router for $10 after rebate from amazon http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/AS...60549-2077654.

Then you just hook the router to the dsl modem...then each machine hooks to the router..usually very simple to get working as you can use most of the defaults.

Through the use of a router you don't need ICS. Utilizing ICS is very dangerous in the ability to be compromised. If you let the router handle DHCP, it will aid in "hiding" your systems a little better.
